In Germanic-Scandinavian mythology, Heimdall is a god from the Aesir family, the guardian of the gods and the world tree Yggdrasil, the son of Odin and nine different mothers. “The most powerful of the Aesir”, ‘who foresees the future like the Vans’. As a gods’ guardian, he protects the rainbow bridge Bifrost from the Jotuns on the border of Asgard and Midgard. He can see both day and night at a distance of a hundred miles and hears the leaves falling, the grass growing in the field, and the wool on the sheep. He is a reliable guardian because he does not need sleep at all. On behalf of the gods, Heimdall blows the golden horn of Gjallargorn when he sees enemies approaching. The last sound of the horn is to be heard when the world ends and the time comes for the last battle of Ragnarok, during which Heimdall and Loki kill each other.
